How to photograph the text ring

    Fill the frame with the ring

    Point the front of the lens at the camera and move in until the engraved name, focal length and aperture span most of the photo. The serial number helps date the variation, so keep it in view.

    Kill the glare

    Coated glass and chrome throw reflections that hide letters. Step away from windows and lamps, tilt the lens a few degrees until the engraving reads cleanly, and shoot in soft, even light.

    Focus on the text, then hold still

    Tap the engraving to focus. Rest the lens on a table or brace your elbows so the letters stay sharp. One clear frame beats five blurry ones.
